I am looking at a Triumph Street Triple vs a Z1000, and might think about other bikes as well.

Having a ''different'' brand is cool, except when it breaks and no one can fix it for a price you can afford.

What is the quality and cost of maintainence for Triumph motorcycles

If u have never owned a Triumph, then now u should!

They r superbly reliable.
All consumables (oils, plugs, filters) cost same as Jap bikes.
Chains & sprockets same, tyres etc.
It is difficult to compare major costs as Triumph & others dont seem to need anything these days!

I've riden a Sprint & 2 Tigers in the last decade.
In over 100k I've never had a fault.
Service them, like all machines, & they will look after you.... :-)

Also, as the engine is so torquey, it doesnt knacker the chain so quickly!
A nice even spread of power rather than nasty surges!

If u aint had one yet, give it a go.
British quality.

I've had three Hinckley Triumph triples: a 99 Legend, a 98 Daytona, & a 98 Trophy. They r excellent bikes! The comments about the aluminum r absolutely not true in my experience; in any event, how a bike looks after a couple years is a function of how u take care of it, not anything else.
My Trophy had 53,000 miles on it when I sold it, & it had never had the engine open except to do the required valve checks. (PS, at 52K miles, the valve clearances were the same as they were at 24K). All it needed were tires, oil, chain, & filter changes.

That said, NO modern bike of these types is cheap to own compared to a car; but compared to other bikes, Triumph is as good as any.

And NO, the engines were NOT designed or built in Japan, they r British designed with World-sourced components.

I have had my Trump for 4 yrs., not a single problem. If you have a question- I call the service dept. at the dealer. Also there are a lot of Triumph websites devoted to troubleshooting and customizing. Every mod I've done- I've done myself, except getting the oil changed and a local bike shop (small mom and pop shop) does that. They are great bikes.

The modern Triumph triple engines r of Japanese design & r very dependable. I have not heard anything negative about them. I do not know how they compare with other brands parts prices but that would be easy enough to compare by looking online & comparing part for part with other bikes u r looking at. If u want to compare shop prices that would be easy enough to do also. Finding a GOOD shop is the hard part no matter what u ride. The best thing to do there would be to buy a shop manual & learn to do ur own maintenance & that would in turn help u to learn to know ur bike & head off any major problems that might occur otherwise keeping shop repairs to a minimum or not at all. All of todays modern bikes r super reliable. I think it is very rare to have major problems with today is bikes unless u r not performing good or regular maintenance. I say check the parts prices & buy the bike u like best. I do not think u can go wrong. Good Luck

I read in one review that the aluminum tends to tarnish on Triumphs, and the bolts prematurely show rust. Sure enough I saw one just a few years old and these things made it look 20 years old.

Triumph are a brilliant bike and depending on where you are a dealer should be consulted when problems arise
I have seen to many people taken for a ride with bike repairs
